The LDS Church Under
Condemnation
Logical Proof: The Lord Pronounced the Church Under Condemnation because its Teachings and Actions Are Not Aligned with the Scriptures. That Condemnation Continues to Exist Today for the Same Reasons
Premise 1: The Lord stated in Doctrine and Covenants 84:54-57 that the entire LDS Church, including its leadership, was under condemnation for treating lightly the Book of Mormon and the commandments in the scriptures, by not teaching and doing what was written.
D&C 84:55-57: "Which vanity and unbelief have brought the whole church under condemnation. ... And they shall remain under this condemnation until they repent and remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon and the former commandments which I have given them, not only to say, but to do according to that which I have written."
Premise 2: This condemnation has not been revoked and was explicitly reiterated by President Ezra Taft Benson in 1978 and by Elder Dallin H. Oaks seven years later.
President Benson (General Conference, April 1986, "Cleansing the Inner Vessel"): Stated that the Church was still under the same condemnation for not teaching and doing the things written in the scriptures.
Elder Oaks: Reinforced this in the mid-1980s, further confirming that the condemnation persisted.
Premise 3: The condition for lifting the condemnation, as given in D&C 84:57, is for the Church to fully repent and begin both teaching ("saying") and doing ("acting upon") what is written in the Book of Mormon and the commandments, (contained in the Book of Commandments which became the Doctrine and Covenants), given by the Lord.
Premise 4: If the Church were teaching and doing all that is written in the scriptures, the Lord's stated condemnation would have been lifted. Since no such reprieve has been declared, the Church cannot logically be fully aligned with the teachings and commandments in the scriptures.
Premise 5: If the Church, as an institution, is not teaching and doing what is in the scriptures, it logically follows that:
- The curriculum (manuals, conference addresses, and institutional teachings) does not fully align with the scriptures. - The leadership and membership are not fully adhering to the scriptural directives.
Premise 6: To claim that the Church is aligned in its teachings and actions with the scriptures is to assert one or more of the following:
The revelation contained in Doctrine and Covenants 84 is false and not a true revelation, contradicting the foundational claim of the LDS Church that its canonized revelations are divinely inspired. The Lord, who gave the revelation in D&C 84, is a liar and was not speaking the truth, which is incompatible with the Church's doctrinal teaching that God is incapable of deceit (Numbers 23:19; Ether 3:12). President Ezra Taft Benson, while speaking as the prophet to the Church, was deceived or wrong, implying that those who reject his statements about the Church's condemnation are more capable of leading and discerning truth for the Church than he was. Elder Dallin H. Oaks, who reiterated and supported President Benson's teachings, was also deceived by President Benson, further undermining the credibility of modern prophetic and apostolic leadership in the Church.
Premise 7: Assuming that D&C 84 is a true revelation from the Lord, that the Lord does not lie, and that President Ezra Taft Benson and Elder Dallin H. Oaks were correct in their assessment that the Church remains under condemnation for not saying and doing what is taught in the scriptures, then the following must logically be concluded:
The teachings and actions of the Church cannot be presumed to align with the scriptures, as the persistent condemnation indicates a deviation from scriptural principles and commandments. Readers of the scriptures must approach them with the expectation that the scriptures may expose discrepancies or contradictions with what is taught and done in the Church. It is therefore unreasonable to assume that Church teachings and practices will naturally reflect or support the doctrines, principles, and commandments outlined in the scriptures, as the condemnation persists due to this very misalignment.
Premise 8: The Necessity of Testing Teachings and Policies Against Scripture Given that the Church remains under condemnation for not teaching and doing the things written in the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants (D&C 84:57), it is a logical necessity to:
Test Every Teaching and Policy: Evaluate every teaching, policy, and practice in Church manuals and from Church leaders against the teachings and commandments in the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants. This testing must be done to identify areas of misalignment or neglect that have brought about and perpetuated the condemnation.
Identify the Cause of Condemnation: Through careful study and prayer, determine what the Church as an institution, and its members individually, are failing to say and do in alignment with the scriptures. This includes examining whether current teachings, policies, and practices have been influenced by "vanity and unbelief" (D&C 84:55) rather than scriptural truth.
Repent Boldly: Once these areas of misalignment are identified, repentance requires boldly beginning to say and do what is written in the scriptures. This involves prioritizing the teachings of the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants as the foundation for doctrine and practice, even when doing so requires significant institutional or cultural changes.
Root Out the Causes of Condemnation: Systematically remove or reform teachings, practices, and policies that contradict or neglect the commandments and principles found in the scriptures. This process is essential for aligning the Church with divine expectations.
Conclusion: Only Then Can the Condemnation Be Lifted The condemnation pronounced in D&C 84:55-57 will remain upon the Church until these actions are undertaken. It is only by testing every teaching and policy against scripture, repenting boldly, and fully aligning the Church’s teachings and actions with the revealed word of God that the condemnation can be lifted. This process requires humility, self-reflection, and a commitment to follow the Lord’s instructions as given in the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants.
By rooting out those things that have brought about the condemnation, the Church can fulfill its divine mission and regain the favor of the Lord.
